Oceanographic and Geophysical Services

Scimar provides an engineering consultancy, design and build service to the Oceanographic and Geophysical research communities, both directly and as a specialist subcontractor to a small group of companies, a grouping deriving from senior staff who at various times worked in the former Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (Godalming UK, now re-located to the Southampton Oceanography Centre). This was then and is now considered to be the UK's main centre of excellence in deep ocean sciences.

Work includes:

• electronic subsystems for laboratory corelogging
• control electronics and software for in-situ chemical analysis and underwater photography
• electronic and computing systems for underway bottom spectral gamma logging (both NaI and cryo Ge)

Expertise is available in water velocity measurement by acoustic doppler and E.M. means, and for tide height measurement.

A major project for a specially formed company, 3D Instruments Ltd, is nearing completion. 3DI have developed a major new technology for real-time platform attitude measurements, offering 3 axis attiude measurement, with unlimited rotation on all axes, and 0.01 degree resolution. These devices will offer gyro like results, at a fraction of the cost and power, and with enormously increased ruggedness. Links to 3DI will be included soon.
